Mammillaria matudae, often called the Matuda’s Pincushion Cactus, is a slender and distinctive species of cactus known for its tall, cylindrical shape and densely packed white spines. Native to Mexico, this cactus typically grows in a solitary column, reaching up to 30 cm in height. The body of Mammillaria matudae is a vibrant green, which is mostly hidden beneath a thick covering of fine, white radial spines and longer, reddish-brown central spines. The contrast between the green body and its spiny surface gives the plant a textured, almost bristly appearance. In spring and summer, Mammillaria matudae produces bright magenta-pink flowers that form a crown-like ring near the top of the plant, adding a striking splash of color to its appearance.
This cactus is easy to care for and thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. It prefers well-draining soil, such as a cactus mix, and should be watered sparingly, with the soil allowed to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering should be avoided, as it can lead to root rot. During its growing season, occasional feeding with a cactus fertilizer can encourage blooming and healthier growth. Like most cacti, Mammillaria matudae enjoys warm temperatures but should be protected from frost and excessive humidity. With its upright form, easy maintenance, and beautiful flower display, this cactus is perfect for both beginners and seasoned collectors, adding a striking vertical element to any collection.
