Echinopsis aurea, commonly known as the Golden Easter Lily Cactus, is a compact and beautifully rounded species prized for its cheerful display of large, golden-yellow flowers that appear in spring and summer. Native to Argentina, this charming cactus forms a neat, globular body with pronounced ribs lined with small clusters of spines that range from pale to honey-brown. Its modest size and bright blooms make it an ideal choice for indoor collections, windowsills, and mixed cactus arrangements.
This species is particularly loved for its stunning floral display. The funnel-shaped flowers, often larger than the body itself, open during the day and emit a gentle fragrance. When grown in bright light, the plant maintains a firm, rounded shape and a healthy green colour. Echinopsis aurea thrives in a sunny position, ideally receiving several hours of direct sunlight each day. It prefers a gritty, well-draining cactus compost and should be watered sparingly—only when the soil has completely dried out. Overwatering can quickly lead to root rot, so it’s best to err on the dry side, especially during the cooler months.
During the active growing season, occasional feeding with a diluted cactus fertiliser will encourage healthy growth and flowering. In winter, keep the plant in a cool, bright spot and reduce watering significantly to allow it to rest. Echinopsis aurea is easy to care for and rewards patience with a spectacular show of golden blooms each year, making it a delightful and eye-catching addition to any cactus collection.
