The Araucaria araucana, better known as the Monkey Puzzle Tree, is one of the most distinctive and fascinating conifers you can grow. Native to the cool, temperate forests of Chile and Argentina, this remarkable tree has existed for over 200 million years, earning it the title of a true “living fossil”. Its striking whorls of tough, triangular leaves form a dramatic architectural shape, making it an eye-catching focal point in any garden.

As a CITES Appendix I listed species, the Monkey Puzzle Tree is internationally protected and considered of significant conservation value. Its rarity makes it a very special addition for plant lovers, collectors, and those wishing to grow something truly unique.

The Monkey Puzzle Tree grows well in most parts of the UK, thriving in full sun and in well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. It prefers an open position where its distinctive shape can be fully appreciated. This hardy evergreen can tolerate cold winters and even exposed sites, making it suitable for a wide range of gardens.

When young, it will need regular watering until established, but avoid waterlogging. Once mature, it is low-maintenance and generally pest-free. No pruning is required except to remove any damaged branches.

In ideal conditions, a Monkey Puzzle Tree can grow around 20–35 cm per year when young, slowing as it ages. It may take 20–30 years to reach its full mature height of 15–25 metres, but its unique form will be admired at every stage of its life.

A rare and ancient tree with a rich history, the Monkey Puzzle is both a conversation piece and a living legacy.
