Cactus Mammillaria bombycina

Mammillaria bombycina, also known as the Silken Pincushion Cactus, is a charming and unique species of cactus known for its soft, silvery-white spines and distinctive globular shape. Native to Mexico, this small, cluster-forming cactus grows in tight, rounded mounds, with individual stems covered in tubercles from which the spines emerge. The combination of its thin, white radial spines and longer, reddish-brown central spines gives it a delicate, silken appearance, while the cactus itself has a pale green body that provides a subtle background to its beautiful spines. In spring and early summer, Mammillaria bombycina produces small, pink or magenta flowers that circle the top of the cactus like a crown, adding a vibrant pop of color.

Caring for Mammillaria bombycina is straightforward, as it thrives in bright, indirect sunlight and prefers a well-draining cactus mix to prevent root rot. Watering should be done sparingly, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings, particularly during its dormant winter period. It’s a drought-tolerant plant, but during its growing season, moderate watering will keep it healthy. This cactus enjoys warm temperatures but should be protected from frost.
