Sarracenia ‘Barba Red’ is a remarkable trumpet pitcher plant known for its unique red ‘lobster-trap’ style of capturing prey. Its pitchers feature nectar-producing glands that entice insects to enter. Once inside, the insects are drawn deeper into the pitcher, where they become trapped in a sticky, enzyme-rich liquid at the base, eventually serving as nourishment for this carnivorous plant. Indigenous to the United States, Sarracenia thrives in moist, swampy habitats. It’s incredibly easy to grow and does well in an unheated greenhouse or on a cool windowsill. To keep the plant healthy, avoid direct sunlight and ensure the soil remains consistently moist. Use distilled or rainwater for watering, as tap water may contain lime and chlorine, which can be detrimental to the plant.
